SUN...orange, green, blue & blue 2005
Atlanta, GA

Artist Amy Landesberg describes this sculpture “As if a flock of luminous shadow-casters had alighted on the face of the building, the pieces perch on their stainless steel posts in a wind-blown formation.”  The seven stainless steel wings hold stained glass panels that splash color across the exterior walls of The Center for Health and Rehabilitation.  Layout for the array was based on the sun’s path at the vernal equinox and the autumnal equinox, the twin mid-points of the solar year.

Each wing mounts on a bent pipe arm that cantilevers out from vertical supports hidden in the building walls.  PEC consulted with Ms. Landesberg on structural design of the art itself, evaluation of the existing structure, hidden support details and connections to the building, and on fabrication and installation issues.  One of the trickiest steps was in some ways one of the simplest – how to get the full height internal pipe columns from horizontal to upright, given that they were exactly as tall as the available clear height.

See it just north of Freedom Parkway at 265 Boulevard in Atlanta, Georgia.
