The Battle House
Mobile, AL

Originally built circa 1910, this reinforced concrete structure had a long run as Mobile’s grande dame, but the nine story building was abandoned beginning in 1976.  In 2000 Smith Dalia and PEC began a long process to evaluate corrosion and deterioration and design repairs, modifications, and upgrades.  Structural renovations included extensive damage repair, demolition of one wing of the old hotel, new floor area for a theater and the two story ballroom, new mechanical mezzanines and floor openings for new stairs, restoration of a host of old architectural features, and a very long list of individual structural reinforcements.  When Hurricane Katrina passed through during construction, the old building suffered the indignity of 12’ of flood waters.

With gorgeous public spaces, including a restored and spectacular grand lobby, The Battle House is once again the queen of Mobile.  In 2007, Building Design and Construction named 13 national winners of its annual awards for renovation.  Only three were recognized at the highest (platinum) level.  One of these was at the Smithsonian, the other two are PEC projects, including The Battle House.  Visit The Battle House Website
