The Battle House Hotel

view
Location:
Mobile, AL
Architect:
Smith Dalia Architects
Project:
The Battle House hotel is an icon in Mobile, but sat vacant for 26 years until 2002.   Over four years PEC evaluated existing deteriorated conditions and developed repairs and upgrades for the 9 story reinforced concrete structure originally built in 1910.  Enclosing 172,000 square feet, the finished project includes hotel rooms, service areas, restaurants, lounge and meeting rooms, a ballroom and a stunning grand lobby.  During renovations it survived 12’ of flood waters from Hurricane Katrina and once again reigns over downtown Mobile.

Ebenezer Baptist Church

Location:
Atlanta, GA
Architect:
Lord, Aeck & Sargent Architects
Project:
PEC has designed and supervised structural repair and reinforcement of both phases of the ongoing restoration efforts at historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, indelibly associated with the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We have been working closely with LAS and the National Park Service for eight years to restore the roof, vaulted ceiling, Sanctuary, balcony, organ chambers, baptistery, and Fellowship Hall of the church, originally constructed from 1914 to 1922, to the period of significance defined by Dr. King’s service as co-pastor from 1960 to 1968.

Fort Washington

Location:
Fort Washington, MD
Architect:
Lord, Aeck & Sargent Architects
Project:
Fort Washington was built to guard the nation’s capital following the war of 1812, and completed in 1824.  It stands on the Maryland side of the Potomac River, and from atop the northwest demi-bastion you can see Mt. Vernon to the south and the Washington Monument to the north.  PEC consulted with LAS and international experts on stone masonry to help restore the gate house and several key deteriorating walls, and designed structural repairs and restoration of the Officers’ Quarters and the Soldiers’ Barracks buildings inside the main fort.

Imperial Hotel

Location:
Atlanta, GA
Architect:
Smith Dalia Architects
Project:
When construction began on this eight story Chicago style businessman’s hotel in 1910, it was considered a skyscraper.  Built as a “fireproof” building for around $100,000, it has a concrete frame with exterior walls of brick veneer on terra cotta clay tile back-up.  By the early 1990’s it had been abandoned for 15 years.  The entire building was gutted, and PEC guided Smith Dalia through the structural details of an award winning restoration.  Now the Imperial Hotel has a new life as secure, low income housing in downtown Atlanta to go with its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

West College Avenue Houses

Location:
Decatur, GA
Architect:
Ann Beha Architects, Boston
Project:
Working in collaboration with Ann Beha Architects and the local historic commission, PEC evaluated the condition and construction of three 19th century houses owned by Agnes Scott College.  We designed comprehensive repairs, reinforcements and modifications to upgrade the framing and foundation of all three for renewed use as staff housing and administrative facilities, creating in the process three beautiful additions to the Agnes Scott campus.
